the jury of experts from VOLLMER and independent judges. In January 2019, the selected youth candidates could present their passion for STEM, their varied engagement and, of course, themselves live at a VOLLMER workshop. And, although it was a diffi- cult decision for the jury, the winner of each category was soon decided. The award for initiatives and the €4000 prize money went to the cooperation of Stadtteilhaus Gaisental (Gaisental District House) and Biberach University Even in Heinrich Vollmer's time, young people's development has always played a major role at VOLLMER. And it still does today, a fact emphasised by the Sieglinde Vollmer Foundation, which commits itself to the development and education of young people and engi- neering and industrial sciences students. To recognise this, the Sieglinde Vollmer Award was introduced. Its aim: To strengthen and enhance science, technology, engineering and mathe matics – STEM for short – in the region. At the end of 2018, the foundation first called for proposals for the competition in two categories. The first was in the “Youth” category, calling on young people who are particularly engaged in the field of STEM above and beyond their regular studies. The second category focused on initiatives, which allow young people to develop their skills. The quality of the submissions surpassed even the highest expectations. There were twelve candi- dates for the “Youth” category in total and three nominees for the “Initiatives” category, all of which were considered by 2019 prizewinners: Manuela Gürntke, Anette Schober-Knitz (2nd and 3rd from the left) Project “MACH MI(N)T”//Benno Hölz (3rd from the right), Rudolf Erdmann Mey (far right) THE SUSTAINABLE ENGAGEMENT OF THE NEXT GENERATION.
